Robert Jillett - His Lineage
This information was sourced by Joan Jillett from photocopies taken from the Surrey Marriages and Births………………and provided in a letter dated 1994 to Dianne Struthers.
“Robert Jillett was not born in Surrey, neither was he married there, nor his 5 children born there. T am enclosing a photostat of the Surrey Marriages and Births. He was 72 when he died in 1832 so he would have been born about 1760, even 59 or 61 if his age was given correctly when he died. It took me hours and hours to take out the information from the Marriages and Births. I think that perhaps his parents were there for some time, and also his grandparents. Kent would be the best place to look for his family, I think. One of his daughters, at Back River, grew hops. I thought he might have known something about growing them, and Kent was known for the growing of hops. Seven Oaks, which is in Kent is a known name.
The phostat came from the Geneological Society here. I am not a member, and I can’t get over there either, it is across the other side of the Derwent somewhere. But I think most Gen Socs. Have copies of the Marriages and Births for the counties of England, so if you got in touch with someone in the Brisbane Society, they might be able to look to see if he was born in Kent or married or whatever. “

The spelling of the surname would have been the result of the person who was writing the names at the time. Often it was the clergy who had learnt to write, and they recorded names as they thought they were spelt. This causes a great deal of confusion when trying to research.
